For the love of Bembo
This design marries the traditional Bembo typeface, used in countless books and publications throughout history, with the colour and lightness of contemporary typographic design. It seeks to demonstrate to designers how Bembo can be brought into the 21st Century, and pay homage to its excellence through the integration of traditional and contemporary printing techniques. The chosen excerpts from Bembo’s work not only hail the individual forms of glyphs, but also tell something of its genealogy. The accompanying ligature stamp set aims to prompt designers to engage with and consider the skill, time and beauty involved in traditional typographic design processes. Bembo is a regal font that is nostalgic for a classical era of knowledge, literature and love. Whether intentional or not, the typeface is an epithet of its namesake.
